Introduction

Käthe Kollwitz's most famous image is probably the 1924 drawing that she entitled "Never Again War." The drawing resonated with women active in the International Section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Frida Perlen wrote a pamphlet in 1927, Der Kampf der Frauen gegen die Hölle von Gift under Feuer (The Women's War against the Hell of Gas and Fire), which published many of the resolutions adopted in the course of the campaign against chemical warfare. In what must have been a conscious reference to Kollwitz's drawing, the pamphlet concluded:

"Nie wieder Krieg!"[16]
