Promote Activism around Women's Issues in Librarianship during the 1970s?
During the second wave of the women's movement in the late 1960s, women's groups within the American Library Association emerged as socially active organizing structures within the association. The resurgence of the women's movement along with a growing body of research revealing discrimination against women working in libraries led librarians to mobilize and create official bodies within the American Library Association to fight for women's issues. The Task Force on the Status of Women in Librarianship (founded 1970) and The Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship (1976) fought to end discrimination against women in the profession, and in the larger society. This project presents documents from the two groups including newsletters, meeting agendas and minutes, letters and memos, and resolutions.
