Introduction

This last note is an e-mail from Casey to me, 36 years later, recapping the series of letters between Sara and Casey (See Documents 87A-B) and between Casey and the other women to whom Casey reached out after receiving Sara's initial letter. This last e-mail summarizes the responses of the women whom Casey wrote in an effort to clarify authorship.

RE Personal Politics

Dear Elaine,

Evidently Sara sent me her dissertation, which became Personal Politics, sometime before March 1978. On March 1 I sent comments. I can't tell if what I have is what I sent or a draft. Terrible typing . . . must have been a draft . . . and heavily annotated, evidently after the fact. I'm going to type this up.

Then in June Sara sent the Waveland women's memo, asking for my permission, as author, to print it in the book. I responded and sent the memo to others I thought had a part in writing the document. I'm including that correspondence here.

I recall that you were in NYC that spring and let me know you were in on the writing of the paper. The only written response was from Emmie, who doesn't remember the Waveland paper at all, but still has the Sex and Caste piece. (I'm going to try to get a copy of that from her. I don't know of any other copy and can't remember who all we sent it to. Evidently we listed the recipients on the paper.)

It seems to me I let Sara know the results of my inquiries, but I don't have any further correspondence.

Talk soon.
Love,
[Signed]
Casey
