Document 81P: Francis Hamlin Mitchell, Photo, SNCC planning meeting prior to the March from Selma to Montgomery, 16 March 1965, Elaine DeLott Baker Papers, Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University.

Introduction

This photo was taken by Black photographer Francis Hamlin Mitchell (Mitch) prior to the March from Selma to Montgomery. Mitch was a World War II veteran and Ebony Magazine photographer before joining the SNCC photography project in 1964-65. Among the participants are Stokely Carmichael, standing; Ivanhoe Donaldson, seated on his right; Cleveland Sellers, laying in the middle of the floor with his head resting on a colleague's lap; Wendy Vaughs, her head resting on her hand. The photo displays the ambiance of SNCC meetings--the late hours and fatigue, the closeness, the commitment and gravitas, the seriousness and the beauty of the people, men and women, Black and white.
