   The Hayes brothers were well known as staunchly opposed to civil rights activity and thought to be significantly involved in the violence towards civil rights workers. The sharecroppers who lived and worked on their plantation were warned against becoming involved in any civil rights activity, but were not deterred. Fannie Lou Hamer, who was beaten, jailed and thrown off of the plantation where she lived and worked in Greenwood, Mississippi for registering to vote was perhaps the most public case of retaliation, but certainly not an exception.
