Document 17: "Cooking Lessons," Annual Report of 1905, unprocessed collection of YWCA of Greater Baltimore, 128 W. Franklin Street, Annual Reports, 1903-1910.

Introduction

Along with sewing, book-keeping and millinery classes, the YWCA offered cooking lessons.  Providing a well cooked meal for a husband and children was certainly seen as a necessary skill for a good middle-class woman.  Notice, however, the emphasis on practical cooking.  These lessons were intended for women who could not afford to hire a cook.

COOKING LESSONS

Two attractive lessons in chafing dish cookery were given by Miss Holt, of N. Y., and made especially interesting in that the lessons were practical as well as demonstrative.  Ten chafing dishes were used, each with its own complement of cooking utensils and ingredients, the results netting seventy-five dollars ($75.00.)

Classes in cooking will begin at once under the direction of Miss Wylie of the Lawrence House Settlement.

The first class for practical cookery has been formed, others for fancy desserts will follow.  The active interest and co-operation of Committee and Secretary demand the thanks of the Chairman.
