Introduction
Artemisia Gentileschi was a talented artist in early seventeenth-century Italy, and a woman whom the Guerrilla Girls admired for her courage under vicous attack. Her 1610 work, "Susanna and the Elders," is here used as inspiration for the Guerrilla Girls to once again challenge the idealization of femininity and the harsh realities of patriarchal power. Their revised masterpiece, "Guerrilla and the Elders", 1998, appears in their book, The Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art (New York: Penguin Books, 1998), p. 6, and on their website.
