Introduction

These four television advertisements, paid for by the Iowa Women’s Equality Campaign in 1992, emphasized in simple statements many of the main points of the campaign and aimed to undermine the campaign run by anti-ERA organizations. Document 18A described the economic gains women would make under the ERA, while Document 18B suggested instructions for voting on the ERA were placed obscurely on the ballots used for the referendum on election day.  Document 18C and Document 18D are direct attacks on some of the more outrageous statements made by opponents of the ERA like Phyllis Schlafley and Pat Robertson.

"ERA Stats script"
Version 2

"FLASH ON SCREEN: "LETS LOOK AT THE FACTS"   Iowa needs an equal rights amendment.
Let's look at the facts.

Visual of woman graduating high school.

Visual shrinks and becomes a bar graph
with $14,560 label at top of bar. Bar
on left side of screen. Visual of
plain-clothes man starts small and
expands to fill up higher bar graph on
right side of screen with $19, 292
label at top.

In Iowa, a woman high school graduate
makes nearly $5,000 a year less than a
male drop-out.

FLASH ON SCREEN: "AND IT GETS WORSE"

Visual of middle-aged woman appears
and shrinks into bar graph labeled 54-
cents, positioned on left side of
screen. Visual of middle-aged man
appears and expands into bar graph
nearly twice the size labeled $1.00 on
right-hand side of screen.

And it gets worse. A middle-aged woman
gets paid only 54 cents to a man's
dollar.

FLASH ON SCREEN: "DEPRIVED OF
MILLIONS"

Visual of older woman fills screen,
looking sad, desperate, full of pain,
slowly fades into darkness (for some
drama)

By the time she reaches 65 she's twice
as likely to live in poverty. Sex bias
deprives older women of millions.

Give women the power
of the constitution.

(Visual of Constitution?)   Vote YES on Amendment 1.

FLASH ON SCREEN: "YES ON AMENDMENT 1, EQUALITY PAYS"[A]

Equality pays.

A. A handwritten notation indicated that these visuals were replaced with bar graphs and a video clip of an "older woman."
