Biography of Emily S. (Mrs. J.M.) Johnson, 1859-1934

Mrs. J. M. Johnson (Emily S.) was born in Sweden on May 22, 1859. She married the Norwegian-born J.M. Johnson around 1880. They had five children, Anna Laura, Edwin, Gust, Roy and Frank William.

Johnson was an active member of the Scandinavian W.C.T.U. She worked in many roles including treasurer in 1905, superintendent of the Marcy and Help Department in 1910, and vice-president in 1914. She was also chosen to be Fargo's delegate to the W.C.T.U.'s Fifteenth District Convention. She was known for her effective recruitment of new members and had her travel to the convention paid by the state W.T.C.U in recognition of her efforts.

She also served as the Vice President of the Ladies' Aid Society of St. Marks English Lutheran Church (1910) and was a member of a committee making recommendations to create a Working Woman's Club in downtown Fargo in 1905. She is listed as a member of the Votes for Women League of North Dakota in the Fargo branch records.
