Biography of Adelaide Lawrence, 1837-1929

By Mike Markham, Student, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Oshkosh, WI

Adelaide Lawrence was born in Harrington, Maine, on May 8, 1837, to Martha and Dennison Campbell. Adelaide had four siblings: Lewis William, Arthur R., Guelford, and Matilda. In 1854, Adelaide married George Pierpoint Shoppe, and two years later the pair moved from Maine to St. Anthony, Hennepin, Minnesota. George and Adelaide had two children together: Frank and Mary. George was killed during the Civil War, and, on June 28, 1868, Adelaide married William Hilman Lawrence. Adelaide and Lawrence had one son together, Percy.

Adelaide was an early supporter of the Minnesota women's suffrage movement. She joined the Minneapolis Political Equality Club in the 1860s, and 1915 and 1920 Star Tribune articles recognize her as being one of the Club's oldest members. The History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 6: 1900-1920, also acknowledges Adelaide as a "devoted friend and worker" of the Minnesota women's suffrage movement. At the age of 91, and after residing in the Minneapolis area for over 73 years, Adelaide died on January 19, 1929.
