Sallie Barker Atkins was born in Clarksville, Tennessee to Caroline Barker and George S. Atkins on December 25, 1862. She lost her father at an early age. After marrying Henry E. Bryan on July 21, 1883, she settled into the rural Hampton Station area of Montgomery County and lived there until her death on July 10, 1924. She and her husband reared two adopted children, Fletcher and Lucy Beaumont, from their early childhood.
Sallie Bryan was an early member of the Clarksville Equal Suffrage League and served as its treasurer in 1917 and 1918. At the February 26, 1918 meeting where members voted to endorse Mrs. Leslie Warner of Nashville for state president, Sallie collected the dues needed to ensure the local league's representation at the upcoming Memphis meeting.
