Congresswoman Barbara Jordan

Washington, D. C.

Dear Congresswoman Jordan:

Thank you very much for contacting HEW about the University of Michigan compliance problem.

One of the reasons why it is important to have support from representatives of all areas of the country is that the universities are opposing HEW's efforts in the same dimension. Since the beginning of 1971, administrative officers of major universities have met, corresponded, and been in touch by telephone in efforts to coordinate their opposition to HEW demands. It is our information that the attorneys have also met to share information about defense tactics in lawsuits brought by women who allege that they have been discriminated against by universities.

Since the opposition to HEW action is coming from many different states, it is essential that the pressure on HEW to act also come from representatives from all parts of the country.

We are appreciative of your willingness to be of assistance in this regard.

Sincerely,

Jean L. King
