How Did Women Shape the Discourse and Further Interracial Cooperation in the Worldwide Mass Movement to "Free the Scottsboro Boys"?

Abstract

This project explores the influence that women exerted in the mass movement for justice and civil rights surrounding the 1930s trials of the Scottsboro Boys. Through original documents, drawn largely from the resources of the Tamiment Library at New York University, the project reveals how a variety of female voices, images, sympathies and concerns contributed to and shaped the worldwide campaign that galvanized public opinion and led to major legal victories for representation and due process for all Americans.
