In 1991, the Woman's Building applied for funds from the Cultural Affairs Commission of the City of Los Angeles. As part of the grant application, the Building had to describe its audience. By this point, the Woman's Building had made major efforts to recast itself as a multicultural arts organization, which members believed would be more attractive to funders. Thus, the audience description contains an estimate of "minority participation." Unfortunately, the Woman's Building did not receive this grant (see Document 23). Previous funds from the Cultural Affairs Commission of the City of Los Angeles had provided a large part of the Woman's Building operating budget, so this rejection contributed to the closure of the Woman's Building (see Document 24).
