Introduction

"Forget the stale, male, pale, Yale textbooks, this is Art Herstory 101!" proclaim the Guerrilla Girls in their introduction to The Guerrilla Girls' Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art (New York: Penguin Books, 1998). In this 1989 poster, the group attacks the longheld focus on white-male centered standards in western art history. Here, they specifically target art collectors (see Document 7), who hold a great deal of sway in making and breaking the careers of contemporary artists as well as in determining the art canon and value of different works from the past.
