These three thirty-second radio advertisements, paid for by Iowa Women's Equality Campaign in 1992, were recorded by Harold Hughes (1922-1996), a well-known Iowa politician who had served as governor of the state from 1963 to 1968 and as a U.S. senator from 1969 to 1975. Hughes's voice lent prestigious support to the ERA campaign.
Hello, my name is Harold Hughes. I had the pleasure of serving Iowa both as Governor and United States Senator. I want to talk to you about a matter of justice. For one hundred forty-six years women have been left out of the Iowa Constitution. It's time to correct this lingering injustice and grant every citizen equality before the law.
