Introduction

"These were the posters that started it all. We plastered them on the walls of SoHo in the middle of the night. A press release promised more to come, warning, 'Simple facts will be spelled out; obvious conclusions can be drawn,'" the Guerrilla Girls wrote in 1995.[22] In citing their statistics, the Guerrilla Girls often turned to museum publications and art magazines. For these two posters they used the Art in America Annual, 1984-1985 and 1985-1986 (see Document 1B). The Girls themselves were surprised by the impact of their posters on the art world and the subsequent fame they experienced. They began by signing their posters, "Guerrilla Girls: Conscience of the Art World," and continued with this slogan in many of their subsequent works.
