Document 16: Guerrilla Girls, "These Are the Most Bigoted Galleries in New York." 1991, in Confessions of the Guerrilla Girls, by the Guerrilla Girls (whoever they really are) (New York: HarperPerennial, 1995), p. 71.
By 1991, six years after the Guerrilla Girls' first attack on New York galleries, more than half of the names listed in "These Galleries Show No More Than 10% Women Artists or None at All," 1985 (see Document 1B) and in the "Guerrilla Girls 1986 Report Card" (see Document 5) continued to engage in exclusionary practices. The Guerrilla Girls responded with one of their boldest statements, naming the "Most Bigoted Galleries in New York." Regarding this poster, the Guerrilla Girls wrote, "After years of our harping on the issue, many important art galleries still don't get it. We had to use the most repugnant word we could think of to condemn them."
